Yoga Therapy
Yoga therapy is much more than just an individual yoga class or indeed a yoga class for one person, and is suitable for those with a range of physical and mental health issues.
“Yoga therapy is a self-empowering process, where the care-seeker, with the help of the Yoga therapist, implements a personalized and evolving Yoga practice, that not only addresses the illness in a multi-dimensional manner, but also aims to alleviate his/her suffering in a progressive, non-invasive and complementary manner. Depending upon the nature of the illness, Yoga therapy can not only be preventative or curative, but also serve a means to manage the illness, or facilitate healing in the person at all levels.”

What is yoga therapy
- It uses the tools of yoga such as postures (asana), breath work (pranayama), sound visualisation and more.
- A bespoke practice is designed specifically for that individual using a collaborative approach based on close observation of the care seeker.
- The initial assessment uses a whole person approach and looks at the care seeker’s general health and lifestyle, diet, sleep and medical history and this, along with some physical assessment (which will include how they move, sit, stand and breath) allows a bespoke, individual practice to be designed.
- This individual practice aims to look at reducing pain to begin with and then improve functionality before finally improving strength as appropriate.
- Yoga therapy is not designed to take the place of conventional medical treatment but can be seen as an add-on to any treatment that you may be currently receiving.
What happens in the sessions
- In the initial assessment a questionnaire is completed (there are forms for you to fill in and for us to complete together) and we then establish goals together for the care seeker to work towards. The care seeker is also asked to complete a physical assessment before a short practice is then designed for self practice. This initial assessment is 90 minutes long.
- Follow-up sessions allow time to reflect and discuss the last practice and what might have changed (if anything) before a further self practice is designed). These sessions are 60 minutes long.
How does it work?
- It is advisable to have at least 6 follow up sessions after the initial assessment and these would usually be every 3-4 weeks.
- The self practice is designed to be ideally done as a daily practice or at least as often as is possible.
- No prior experience of yoga is necessary; I will demonstrate the postures if needed and will guide you through your individual home practice in the session.
